| Students at SMDS-RJA develop a
love and respect for the Hebrew language, a proficient
knowledge of prayer, and the ability to speak and
read the living language of modern Israel. By the
end of Kindergarten, they have a vocabulary of more
than 250 words…and by third grade, they can
carry on simple conversations. Students study both
biblical and modern conversational Hebrew.
Kindergarten-Grade 2:
• Letter identification
• Daily use of Hebrew words and development
of Hebrew vocabulary
• Create and write simple Hebrew sentences
• Read simple Hebrew words and stories
• Recognize and read certain t’fillot
and Torah blessings
• Begin to read simple words in the Torah
Grade 3:
• Understanding different parts of speech
• Ability to read simple stories and follow
simple instructions
• Decoding of root letters
• Knowledge of simple masculine and feminine
nouns and adjectives, and singular and plural
suffixes.
• Compose simple sentences and stories
• Ability and confidence to read from the
Torah
Grade 4:
• Continue to broaden and demonstrate Hebrew knowledge through reading, writing, speaking and chanting
• Begin to recognize and identify nouns and verbs
• Begin to formally conjugate verbs: present, past and future
• Read short stories independently
• Conduct class in Hebrew
• Continue to be surrounded with opportunities for conversational Hebrew
• Continue to build vocabulary and comfort with conversational Hebrew
• Continue to build recognition of Hebrew without vowels
Grade 5
In addition to increasing proficiency in the above skills, students will
• continue to expand their vocabulary
• continue to demonstrate comfort with understanding and speaking Hebrew
• begin to demonstrate proficiency in conjugation of simple verbs in present, past and future tenses
• demonstrate ability to converse in simple sentences
• participate in activities conducted in Hebrew such as cooking, dancing, music and discussions of current events
• become mentors to our third graders learning cantillation
