| The Language Arts curriculum prepares
students to attain high levels of proficiency in
the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Students read and are read to from many genres of
literature, and are encouraged to express their
thoughts and feelings in speech and writing. They
receive frequent, high-quality feedback on their
work, and engage in one-on-one, small group and
whole class discussions on the structure and mechanics
of spoken and written language.
Kindergarten – Grade 2:
• Discuss and respond to literature
• Have sufficient fluency to read for clarity,
understanding and development of ideas
• Move from phonetic spelling towards more
conventional spelling
• Tell and write simple stories
• Begin to revise their own work and respond
to the work of others.
• Capitalize, punctuate, use apostrophes
and plural endings where appropriate
Grades 3 – 5:
• Use the writing process to draft, refine
and publish legible texts in a variety of genres
including fiction, poetry and non-fiction
• Recognize elements of literature and characteristics
of genres
• Develop strategies and resources for correcting
spelling, punctuation, capitalization and grammatical
errors
• Prepare and give oral presentations in
the context of large and small groups
• Paraphrase and summarize texts, draw conclusions,
compare/contrast different texts and points of
view
• Cultivate oral and written communication
skills through guided peer interactions including
accountable talk, discussion, brainstorming, information-gathering,
reflection, conferencing, sharing and presenting |
