| The social studies curriculum
provides students with a framework for defining
themselves and interacting with their world. Through
the study of history, geography, economics, civics,
culture and current events, students develop a sense
of identity, interdependence, empathy, heritage
and social responsibility. Kindergarten:
Celebrations; living together in families and
communities; the United States; harvest festivals
(Sukkot, Thanksgiving, Kwanzaa); China and the
Chinese New Year; Mexico and Cinco de Mayo
Grade 1:
Cultures of the Desert: Israel (Bedouins), United
States (Navajos) and Australia (Aborigines).
Grade 2:
Cultures of the Forest: Brazil (Amazonian tribes
of the rainforest), the Pacific Northwest (Totem
tribes) and Japan (wooded volcanic island).
Grade 3:
Cultures of the Grasslands: Unites States (life
on the Great Plains), Argentina (life on the Pampas)
and Kenya (Life on the Savannah); Lewis and Clark;
Geography, culture, history, economics and civics
Grade 4:
Cultures of the rivers: St. Louis and the Missouri
River; ancient Egypt and the Nile River; England
and the Thames River; China and the Yangtze River.
Grade 5:
American History to 1800, establishing colonies,
from colony to country; the new nation.
